Demystifying Sanskrit… Well, just a little anyway.

Even if you’ve been a regular fixture in a yoga studio and have heard the Sanskrit names of the postures, you still may not realize what they mean.  For example, when you hear, “Utthita Parsvakonasana,” you may automatically move into Extended Side Angle without a thought.  That’s just what the pose is called, right?  Mmmm… yeah.  But Sanskrit is a language like any other, and the words actually DO have meanings behind them!  Here’s a small glossary of terms that may help decipher some of the words you’ve been hearing in class.

Let’s start with Utthita Parsvakonasana.

Utthita = Extended

Parsva = Side

Kona = Angle

Asana = pose

Tada!  Extended Side Angle pose!  Where else may you heard some of those words?  How about Utthita Hasta Padangusthasana?  Utthita (extended) Hasta (hand) Padangustha (big toe) asana (pose).  Utthita Trikonasana?  Yep!  Extended Triangle pose!

adho = down;  adha mukha = downward facing

ardha = half

baddha = bound

bhuja – arm (or shoulder)

hasta = hand (or arm)

mukha = face

namaskara = greeting, salutation

pada = foot or leg

paschimo = west (back of body)

pursvo = east (front of the body)

supta = supine, sleeping

surya = the sun

ubhaya = both

urdhva = upward

vinyasa = the conscious connection of breath and movement

I think we should spend a little time with that last one.  Vinyasas often come between poses, and instructors (myself included) encourage them to keep the heat up in the body after we hold poses for five breaths.  While that is partly true, it is also to accomplish exactly what it means: to connect breath and movement.  Breathing properly can intensify and deepen a pose.  Conversely, not breathing (or breathing in a shallow, non-purposeful way) can make a pose seem more difficult.  Sometimes I think it’s a chicken-and-the-egg situation.  Can we not achieve depth in a pose because we aren’t breathing?  Or are we not breathing because the pose is uncomfortable?  In any case, when we are in these challenging poses, the purposeful, connecting breath can thin out.  The vinyasa is like a little reminder to breathe!  Exhale – chaturanga; inhale – up dog; exhale – down dog… etc.

Namaste.

It’s the Simple Things

As I was sitting in my office at the computer this morning, planning the day and having a delicious cup of coffee, I caught a flutter out of the corner of my eye.  A beautiful butterfly was dancing around the flowers in the window box!

Just a little reminder as we enter the weekend–and it’s a HOT one here in New England–slow down, take a breath and enjoy the simple things.

Yoga Retreat

I’ve had people ask me if I will ever host a yoga retreat.  My immediate reaction is YES!  I love the thought of delicious food, sunshine, yoga and people who love all three as much as I do all coming together at an incredible resort.  With everything that is going on right now, I’m hard-pressed to think I can pull it together for a February 2012 trip.  (Well, I know I could pull it together…  I get s**t done!)  There is a large degree of advertising that needs to happen so that numbers make sense.  I’m thinking…  I’m thinking…  🙂

If I were to host a yoga retreat, would you be interested in hearing about it?  Where would you like to go?  The popular spots seem to be Mexico (Tulum and the Maya Riviera) and Costa Rica.  Is Hawaii too far?  Somewhere in the Caribbean?  Hmmmm….

Koundinyasana = Sanskrit for awesome. Okay, not really. But it IS a pretty awesome pose.

Arm balances can sometime escape me.  And other times, I nail them… like today.  Rock on.  Namaste.

I Feel Blessed and Fortunate

Just thought I’d put that out there.  The people in my life are so amazing–when I stop to think about all that they bring to the proverbial table, it’s beautiful and humbling and awe-inspiring.  I hope that you feel the same way about the folks who you surround yourself with!

Eat your veggies!

I try to do a good job with getting a variety of fruits and veg into my diet.  Sometimes, I can get into a rut.  I’ll admit it.  (Especially after our raw foods chef resigned!  Boo hoo!)  Fortunately, we have this great service that delivers fresh, organic produce to our home every week.  Sometimes we get things that are no brainers–bananas, spinach, strawberries, potatoes, etc.  Other times, we have to email the owner and ask just what the hell we were looking at and how we can use it!

Aside from the convenience, getting a weekly tote keeps me on my toes.  I hate to waste food, so I try to use at least three different fruits and/or veg in each recipe I create.  I’ve become a master at making delicious vegetable soups from scratch.  Creamy and delicious vegan bowls of love, for sure.  I’ve also been known to whip up one hell of a smoothie.  One of my favorites involves kale, blueberries, banana, flax seed, a little almond milk and (maybe) a scoop of protein powder.  The other is a killer “chocolate” shake that is loaded with antioxidants from superfoods like maca and cacao.  Oh, and spinach.  😉  I got the recipe from Stacy Stowers.  She calls it the “Happy Shake.”  The ingredients may have you wonder, but get a look at that photo!  (Yes, it really does look–and taste!–that good.)

HAPPY SHAKE

The BASE:   3-4 cups fresh spinach.  GREEN is Glorious!  1/2 cup liquid–water, juice, nut milk, coconut water.  You pick!   (Start with less liquid and add more as needed)

A GOOD FAT is essential for keeping you satisfied and metabolizing the spinach:  1Tbs. coconut oil (good fat won’t make you fat) or 1-2 Tbs. Hemp Seed (a complete protein).  You can also use a raw egg if you want.

The “HAPPY” Part:  1/2-1Tbs. Maca (for stamina, endurance, mental clarity and peak sexual performance for both men and women); 1Tbs. Raw Cacao (In its raw state, raw chocolate is actually a valuable potent super food loaded with nutrients and neuro-peptides very similar to the ones our bodies create when we are in LOVE!)  1Tbs. a super GREEN RAW powder. GREEN is highly alkalizing. This is crucial! Very important for weight management and longevity!

THIS IS MOST IMPORTANT.  DO NOT ADD FRUIT HERE–BLEND into a SLUDGE!

This is a crucial step for a Happy Shake!

Now you can add your favorite FROZEN fruit–frozen banana, frozen blueberries and/or frozen raspberries.  Blend.

Topping this with cacao nibs or coconut adds a little extra texture and flavor.  You can also add goji berries for an additional antioxidant kick!

Epic Century Cycling Tour

A friend from my college days has set out on an epic journey–he calls it the Epic Century Cycling Tour.  He’s riding his bike everyday for 90-100 days.  Before you start thinking that this sounds like a breeze compared to what you might do for work, take note.  This adventure will average 150 miles a day and he will ride through all 50 state capitals.  It’s no easy feat.  He’ll test his physical and mental endurance as he rides alone with nothing but his bike and backpack.  All told, he will cover over 14,000 miles by the time he finishes!  His hope is to raise money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation, with a goal of raising $100,000!

So, check out his facebook page.  Like him and follow him.  https://www.facebook.com/pages/Epic-Century-Cycling-Tour/132957090099224
